Al Capone Does My Shirts
                        Grades 3-8

Today I moved to a twelve-acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turd and surrounded by water. I'm not the only kid who lives here. There's my sister, Natalie, except she doesn't count. And there are twenty-three other kids who live on the island because their dads work as guards or cook's or doctors or electricians for the prison, like my dad does. Plus, there are a ton of murderers, rapists, hit men, con men, stickup men, embezzlers, connivers, burglars, kidnappers and maybe even an innocent man or two, though I doubt it. The convicts we have are the kind other prisons don't want. I never knew prisons could be picky, but I guess they can. You get to Alcatraz by being the worst of the worst. Unless you're me. I came here because my mother said I had to.

Alcatraz was a very famous prison during the early 1900's. Officials thought that it was a perfect prison because it was on an island and they thought no one could escape. It didn't work as they thought though, and Alcatraz closed down. To live on this island though, like Moose did, would have been scary I think. He was among some of the most notorious criminals in the world! What do you think you would have thought about living there? I hope you enjoy this book by Gennifer Choldenko.

Activity One

Watch the Book Trailer for Al Capone does my Shirts. After you view it, create your own trailer. Have fun with the project, and make sure you include different facts from the book so I'll know you've read it.

Activity Two

Read and research about Al Capone and/or Alcatraz. Find out facts and dates about either one or both of these topics. Once you have the facts, decide how you want to share them with me. Do you want to make a PowerPoint, poster, write a report, or make a video report of yourself sharing the information? The choice is yours, as long as you share the correct information in a neat manner.

Activity Three

Autism, we hear that word so much any more. Read and research autism. What is the disorder? How is it diagnosed? What are the symptoms? What were the views of the disorder in the 1930's, when this book is set? What is the view today? Using the information you have gathered, create a web with AUTISM in the middle, and the different information around this topic. Be creative with your design, and include some pictures as well as words.
