Life on Mars
                      Grades 3-5

Twelve-year-old Arcturus Betelgeuse Chambers comes from a family of stargazers and his quest to find life on other planets is unstoppable. But when Arty's family announces they're moving to Las Vegas, the City of Lights threatens to put an end to his stargazing dreams forever-especially when he has to stay with his scary next door neighbor while his parents look for a house. As it turns out, “Mr. Death” isn't terrifying at all-he's actually Cash Maddox, a bonafide astronaut! But when Cash falls ill, will Arty find the courage to complete his mission by himself? And might he actually prove, once and for all, that there is life on Mars?

Activity One

What would life be like on Mars? Think about the new technologies that have been developed lately. Create a three-dimensional scene following these directions: First, cut a square from a 9 X 12 piece of paper, by folding one corner to a point on the opposite side three inches from the bottom.  Cut off this three inch extra, but save it to create the scene.  Next, fold the square on the diagonal both directions and cut only half way up one of the diagonal lines. Do not cut the paper all the way through.  Now fold one of the flaps onto the other and glue them together.  You should have a triangular pyramid with one side open.  Now add the details for your scene.  It will look similar to the picture above when you are done.

Activity Two

Arcturus Betelgeuse Chambers, the name screams outer space!! Do some research on Betelgeuse, the 9th brightest star in the universe. Share your information in a descriptive picture, video, PowerPoint, short description with a picture, the decision is yours.

Skill Three

Arty finds out that "Mr. Death" is actually a real life astronaut, Cash. What does it take to be an astronaut? Do you have to have a college degree? How many astronauts are there? Look up this information and TYPE a short report to tell us about this job. Would you like to be an astronaut one day? Include that information in your report.
