The Brooklyn Nine
                  Grades 6-8

Baseball is in the Schneider family blood. Each member of this family, from family founder Felix Schneider in the 1800s to Snider Flint in the present day, has a strong tie to the game and to Brooklyn. Through the years this family has dodged bullets on a battlefield, pitched perfect games, and dealt with the devastating loss of family and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Nine innings? nine generations. One game? one family. Through it all, one thing remains true: the bonds of family are as strong as a love of the game.

Level 5; 9 points

Activity One

The Brooklyn Nine traces the Schneider family for many generations. Does your family having something in common like they did? Even if you don't, please create a family three to show me your generations. You will need to go back to at least your great-grandparents. You can follow your tree further back if you would like, but it at least has to go back that far. You can find a form to use online, or you can create your own form to use. If you have any questions, send me an email at jjack@esu11.org.

Activity Two

Basketball star Charles Barkley famously argued that sports figures shouldn't be role models. Is he right? Argue the case
for and against sports stars as heroes.
Who are your heroes? Why do you respect them? Have you ever had a hero who did something you disapproved of? How did you react?

Activity Three

What connection does each of the items in the box Uncle David gives Snider have to do with other “innings” in the book? Sketch out the box and the items that were found in it. Explain what each treasure is and how it relates to the book.
