UNGIFTED
                    Grades 3-5

When Donovan Curtis pulls a major prank at his middle school, he thinks he’s finally gone too far. But thanks to a mix-up by one of the administrators, instead of getting in trouble, Donovan is sent to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction, a special program for gifted and talented students.
Although it wasn’t exactly what Donovan had intended, the ASD couldn’t be a more perfectly unexpected hideout for someone like him. But as the students and teachers of ASD grow to realize that Donovan may not be good at math or science (or just about anything), he shows that his gifts may be exactly what the ASD students never knew they needed.

Level 5.2; 8 points

Have you ever thought you were a genius, or ungifted? Either way, I know you didn't do the silly things Donovan did to get attention. He really was pretty smart, but he took the wrong course and thought it was easier to be funny than smart!

All of probably know a "Donovan" in our school. How do you deal with that person? Do you think that he should have been punished more? Read this book by Gordon Korman to see what NOT to do if you're not fitting in with the rest of the gang.

Activity One

Watch the short trailer for "Ungifted" above. When you are done reading the book, I'm sure you will have a section of the book that you thought was the BEST. With a group of people, recreate that part and video it. Your video needs to be at least two minutes long. I wonder which part you will pick???

Activity Two

All the chapter titles and the book title begin with "un." What other prefixes and word combination could have been used for this book? Come up with at least three different prefixes, and five words for each prefix, that you think would have been appropriate instead of "un."

Activity Three

Create a sculpture similar to the one of Atlas holding the globe at Hardcastle Middle School. Your sculpture needs to be much smaller, but needs to be at least 4 inches high. You can make your sculpture out of paper mache, clay, recycled items, or whatever you have available. Have fun, be creative!!
